First, thank you for this site, it is most helpful to a novice seeker with HC ancestors. Doing in my Senior years what should have been done years ago. I'm the gg-grandson of Thomas Jackson (England 1817 - 1901 Anderson) and Caroline Purdue (NC?, Warren Cty.? 1818 -1899 Middletown). 3 sons: Harrison, John, Calistus and Mary Ann. Thomas/Caroline in Middletown from around 1840? to ?. Appreciate any source for: Thomas/Calistus (several spellings)/Chauncey (several spellings), my grandfather. And/or help locating Caroline Purdue. Calistus married Melissa/Malissa A. Windsor of HC in 1883. Melissa died in 1888 when Chauncey age four. There was also a young daughter. Death Records show Melissa died 14 days after a female child was born to "C" & "Lizzie" Jackson. At age 32, and with 2 small children, I'm doubtful Calistus remained a widower. However, no further Marriage Records in HC or Madison appear. Stymied. Chauncey m. Floy Ratliff, also shown as RatCliff, in 1904.

I have been trying to find the location where the will of my g(3)-grandfather, William Logue, was prepared, witnessed, signed, and (perhaps) filed. The will is dated 30 April 1836. From the contents of the will, I have determined that William may have been residing with his oldest son, Martin Logue, when the will was prepared. According to the 1830 U.S. census, William was living in Guilford Co., NC and his son, Martin, was living in Wayne Co., IN. I have checked for the filing of the will in Guilford Co., NC and Wayne Co., IN to no avail. I recently came across a General Land Office record documenting the sale of land in Hancock Co., IN to "Martin M. Logue of Henry County, Indiana" dated 2 April 1835. Since this record indicates Martin was residing in Henry Co., IN one year before William Logue's will was witnessed and signed, it is quite possible that the record of this will may be found at the office of the Clerk of the Court of Henry Co., IN. I would greatly appreciate any guidance you might give me for conducting this type of research in Henry Co., IN.

Thank you for the wonderful site. Of all of the genealogy sites, with the expection of Ancestry, I have found this site to be most exceptioanl! I have been able to retract the tracks that my ancestors have taken. The Surnames that I'm researching is HOOSIER/KISER/FEARS/MODLIN/THURMAN. My gg-grand father was a former slave from North Carolina, named Joseph Hoosier. He was married to at least 2 women: Minerva Modlin(b)and his last wife was Myra. He is buried in Southmound, as were his wife and a few infant children. His Sister Charity Kiser is also buried in New Castle. I know that there were a group of African American HOOSIER that migrated there from NC that in fact may all be related. If anyone has any information regarding these families, please feel free to contact me. Thank you again for your site. It is a blessing to all that want information about your wonderful town and history. God bless you.

I am researching my family geneology and have traced my family back to Henry Township. NewCastle is listed on their Federal Census of 1860 and Hillsboro on the 1880 Census. Stephen O'Connor with his wife (Ann or Nancy) around 1855 from Ireland. Two sons were born in Ireland, Mathew and James. In 1859, another sone, Stephen was born in Indiana. In 1863, Mary was born in the Henry Township area. Information is unfortunately very scant, infact, family members believed Mathew came from Ireland on his own. We now know this is not accurate. Any help in this area, family members, etc., would be much appreciated.

Excellent job on the website, thank everyone involved. I am the Great-Great-Great Grandson of George Hobson who was one of the original settlers of the New Castle area. The South 9th Street Cemetery site was very helpful. You will notice that the listing at that site mentions many of the Hobson's as "Son of Geo. and Sally", but no where does it give Sally's maiden name. I happen to know that her maiden name was Colburn and that she was related to Revel, but not in what manner. George and Sally's grandson, Jacob Hobson, moved to the Fort Wayne area and established a farm. I actually lived in the old farm house as a young boy. For those trying to trace this branch of the Hobson family, I have more information. Many are buried in the Parker Cemetery in Fort Wayne.

What a wonderful website you have. I have been through the county many times and have done a lot of genealogical searching there in the past. Most of the families I have worked on were there pre-1850. If all counties maintained a website such as yours we genealogists would be much further along in our quest. I particularly enjoyed the historical photographs.

What a Wonderful Website! I'm a decendant of the Wallace and Modlin families of New Castle, IN. I have found so much information for my family history work. Until I found this site it has been so difficult for me because I was born and raised away from these ansestrial roots. Edward Eugene (Gene) Wallace buried in St. Anne's Cem. is my Grandfather. I know that my Great Uncle Joe and his wife are buried there, and I know my Great Grand Parents are there as well. I am currently looking for some one who can give info on the other Wallace and Modlin folks that are buried there. Thanks again for the wonderful genealogical info.

Thank you for such an interesting and informative website. I am working on our family tree and have found this site very helpful. Nearly all my husband's family comes from Henry County. The names I am researching are : Stover, Current, Kendall and Willis. We have quite a few photos that belonged to my husband's Mamaw - Lois Pauline Current Stover. Many are not dated, nor written on. I was thinkng of sending a few your way to see if they looked familiar to anyone. We have several of schools and the children and a few large group pictures including a family reunion of Current, Lake and Lewellen from 1911. Keep up the good work on this great site and thanks again. I would love to hear from anyone with some knowledge of the names I have mentioned, all having to do with Henry County ! Jackie Stover

I'm actively researching the Strong's that moved into Henry County around the 1850's from Colerain Towhship, Hamilton County Ohio. My granmother is Edna Irene Adams Cox Casaday. Her parents were Jeremiah & Ida Bell Adams. Edna was the 5th daughter of 6 and had 2 maybe 3 brothers. One was the minister for the First Christian Church in New Castle. His name was Forest Adams. Edna is 94 years old and in a nursing home. She is the last of her immediate family. My grandfather is Herschell Caroll Cox. He was also born in New Castle. I believe his father's name was Thomas and his mother's name was Mary Saul. I don't have much on them. When I was little, my grandmother told me that her olderst brother (which I think was Forest) had traced the family to Pres John Q Adams. Everything seems to have been lost. The few relatives that I know of, don't know have any info. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Diane E. Melady

William HANLEY and Mary HARKER, my gr-gr-grparents were married in New Castle,Henry Co on 26 Dec 1842 by Wm Hendrix, an elder in the Ch of Christ. I have their marr certificate but cannot find anything else with these surnames in Henry Co. I need to find their parents names. I understand the Historical Museum has complete records for Ch of Christ on Little Blue River. There was a Wm Hendricks, trustee, for Christian (Symon's Creek) in Dudley Twp (date of 21 Feb 1829) and a Wm Hendricks, trustee, for Union Church in Harrison Twp (date 7 Feb 1850) Are membership records available for any of these churches? My grandmother often spoke of her mother's family near Newcastle, and her aunt Bessie Shirk, the family historian. I have been looking at old family photos and wondering who some of the people are, so I thought about contacting someone in the family. I knew that Bessie had died and found that Virginia Lee had died, but I think she had a daughter Amy Connell-Miller, as I have seen the name on genealogy websites. I would love to be able to contact Amy and share family photos and stories--I have several very old daguerreotype photos that I think may be Mahala Dunbar's relations, as well as photos of Nancy Crandall Spell, Julia Crandall Elliott, etc. Do you know if Amy is still in the area? I would like to thank the Henry County Genealogical Services for the repair and preservation of Christopher Long's monument. I am a 7th generation direct line decendent of Christopher Long and had only seen a drawing of the monument done by one of his grandsons. Christopher Long is my fifth great grandfather. I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who was involved in the repair and restoration of my ancestor's grave site after it was hit by an automobile in June. I just found out about it from another cousin. I have never been to Indiana, but have been as far as Iowa last autumn. I hope to go there some day soon, and maybe for the dedication ceremony in November if possible. I just want to say that it touches my heart very deeply to have such wonderful people watching over my 5th great grandparents' stone while I am clear across the country in Olympia, Washington. He was a color sargent at Yorktown and stood 30 steps from General Washington when Cornwallis surrendered his sword. His service to this country means a lot to me and I am so grateful it means so much to other citizens as well. I am a descendant of his son Reuben.
