This year as one of the United Fund's Day of Caring projects, the Beech Grove cemetery in Prairie Township was chosen for our annual Day of Caring' volunteer clean up effort.     After meeting at the Moose Lodge early Tuesday morning for quick breakfast, then picking up our special "Day-of-Caring" t-shirts and supplies, including lunch and drinks for the day, everyone left for their assigned place of work for the day.     The Henry County Cemetery Commission, Beech Grove cemetery trustee, "Big Mike" Burch, along with about two-dozen other volunteers headed out North to the Beech Grove cemetery to do major clean up and repair work.     -- This old pioneer cemetery, located in Prairie Township section # 27 in the northern part of the county on county road #950 north. Was first started by Joseph and Susan Hazelton as a neighborhood burial ground sometime in the mid 1830s. On 5 Jan 1850 Joseph and Susan Hazelton deeded to Elisha Hartley, Russell Williams and Lafora Hale, school district #1 trustees, the land for the burial ground to be known as "Hazelton's Burial Ground" and on 29 Aug 1854, Hugh Hazelton sold the land for $10.00 to Joseph Hazelton, George W. Evans, Lafery Hale, Elisha Hartley and Abraham Fulton, trustees of the church know as the Luray Protestant Methodist for use as a burial grounds to be known as the Beech Grove cemetery. On 11 Sep 1915, church trustees C. B. McKinney, T. C. Robe and J. W. Shriver deeded the cemetery over to the care of civil township trustee C. C. Cory.---     The weather turnd out to be perfect and it was a beautiful day for working in the old cemetery. Many tombstones were cleaned, repaired and reset. Bushes were trimmed and all trash and other debris was picked up and put into a pile to be burned later.     By 3:00 p.m. the cemetery was looking great and everyone was ready to call it a day and return to the Moose Lodge for pizza, drinks and the final wrap up of today's events.     We would like to thank all the volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce; Mike McIntosh, Missy Modesitt, Feryl York, Bill Kindig, Harry and Yettema Woods, Jeff and Bev Glascock. Hinsey Brown volunteers were; John Henderson and Jack Hannum and HCCC members Donna Tauber, Ken and Ann Holmes and the photographer, Bud Bush and any other volunteer that showed up that that I failed to mention.     And a special thanks to cemetery commission member Ken Holmes and Beech Grove cemetery trustee Mike Burch for getting everything set up and ready for the clean-up project.     It was a really great and much appreciated job from everyone. Each cemetery restoration we can do in the county buys a little more time for our old "Pioneer" cemeteries.     THANKS! to each and everyone of you from the HCCC !
