In 1864 Cornelius Smith borrowed $800 to pay army substitute, with Garret as surety for loan. Smith failed in business and Garret paid off note, amounting to $1,000 with interest. Spiceland: "Samuel Porch has arrived safe at home from the everglades of Florida, bringing with him an alligator which fortunately fell prey to him whilst hunting on the St. John's River.
