Richard Modlin obituary. Born Surrey Co., N.C., Oct. 10, 1814, son of William & Anna. In 1817, with parents and brother William aged one, moved to Green's Fork, Wayne County. Few years later to Dudley Twp., Henry County, 1.5 miles east of Hopewell Quaker Meetinghouse. Family Quakers. Married at Hopewell in 1833 to Gulielma Butler. In 1834 moved to farm in Jefferson Twp., where he lived until death. Wife died about 1836. Then married Jane Osburn in Quaker ceremony at Greensboro. Joined M.E. church about 1846. Died Oct. 23, 1870.

Deborah Pennington buried Sunday last, aged 88 years. 50 years a resident of Henry County. Quaker minister.
Enoch Macy died Sunday night, aged about 73 years. "An early settler, an upright man, one of the veteran anti-slavery men of our county."
Charles Dubois, age 24, found hung in father's barn 2.5 miles south of Sulphur Springs on Monday last.
Albert Newby, Spiceland Twp. trustee, seriously ill for a month, once near death, now recovering.
James A. McMeans, 18 years Henry County Recorder, late of Richmond, opening hotel in Beatrice, Nebraska.
"HOUSE BURNED.-About 1 o'clock p.m. on Sunday last, Davis Haynes, living in Prairie tp., about 6 miles north of New Castle, discovered his dwelling was on fire; the upper portion was all in flames before the discovery was made. The whole family was at home, and two young men, neighbors, were in the house, and heard the fire roaring, but supposed it was wagons passing. It was discovered in time, however, to save most of the household goods. No insurance. It is a bad time of year to be turned out of doors in so summary a manner."
"Our friend Jesse Bond, of Spiceland, raised a cabbage head, this season, which weighed 32 lbs. He thinks bone dust had something to do with it. Jesse is one of the wide awake members of the Spiceland Farmers' Club. New York, we believe, has an institution of this character, modeled after the one at Spiceland."
Capt. Steel of Ogden, firm Republican, voted Democratic ticket to see what it would feel like.

Allen, Welborn Healey, & Jehu Stanley. Powell elected, Stanley vice president. Robert B. Carr elected secretary over Thomas Rogers. Benjamin Shirk elected treasurer over Daniel Murphey. Candidates for superintendent: Waterman Clift, G.L. Koons, C.L. Hood, & Luther Modlin. Modlin elected. Candidates for Executive Committee (first five elected): R.H. Cooper, Ezekiel Phelps, Jesse Gilbert, Riley Stanley, Robert M. Butler, William Rieman, G.L. Koons, Thomas Wilhoit, Evan Peed, & Miles Murphey.

Samuel Young of Dunreith House married several weeks ago to Miss Mollie Billings of Noblesville.
R.B. Carr sold newly completed brick house in New Castle to William Elliott.
Deborah Pennington obituary. Born western shore of Maryland, 1782. Married to Josiah Pennington, 1810, soon moved to Belmont Co., Ohio. Then moved to near Richmond, and in the fall of 1823 settled on Duck Creek, in what is now Spiceland Twp. Quaker minister, traveled widely, often called to help sick neighbors.
Enoch Macy obituary. Born North Carolina 9th Mo. 13, 1796, moved to Henry Co., settling on Blue River, 6th Mo. 20, 1837. Active abolitionist. "He was politically a radical among radicals, as well a moral suasionist. First, a member of the Liberty party, then of the Free Soil democracy. . .; then a Free Soiler, and finally a Republican. Abhorred racism. Died 11th Mo. 6, 1870.
Eddie H. Bond, son of Calvin and grandson of Enos Bond, found hanging in father's stable last Tuesday afternoon. Aged 10. Apparently accidental.

Commons Pleas Jury for December term: Harrison Bryan, Harrison Twp; Eli Millikan, Franklin Twp; Jared Coltrain, Franklin Twp; Dennis Kendall, Harrison Twp; William Hobson, Blue River Twp; Francis Downy, Blue River Township; John Hedrick, Fall Creek Twp; Lewis B. John, Liberty Twp; Francis Thomas, Spiceland Twp; Ephraim Draper, Henry B. Harvey, & James W. Saunders, Henry Twp.
Married last Sunday night by Rev. James Dykes at residence of Mrs. Kate Pickering, Middletown, Samuel O. Vance of Greensboro to Miss Sallie Hubbard of Cadiz.
"A colored man who was freed by the Proclamation borrowed the money last spring to pay his passage from North Carolina. He has since refunded the money. Has bought a home and 1.5 acres of ground near Dunreith on which he paid $100 cash. Earned and sent back enough in money to remove his wife and two daughters from Carolina, and is now keeping house as proud as a king, to think that from being a slave he has earned to the position of a freeholder. And yet they tell us 'Negroes won't work.'"
"A company at Spiceland is engaged in importing hounds from North Carolina."
