"There is a pauper in our county asylum who speaks six languages-French, Spanish, German, Italian, Arabic, and English. He is near 70 years old, and a Frenchman by birth." Sixteen black people have arrived in Spiceland from North Carolina. O.H. Hobbs is attempting to find them homes. Spiceland: "Bald eagles have made their appearance on the farm of J.H. Meredith, and are carrying off full grown geese in their talons, also disturbing the peace and quiet of infantile porkers." Spiceland: "The wife of Elisha Hammer, who has been an invalid for several years past, died on Tuesday." Resolutions for Albert Newby by Spiceland Order of Good Templars, signed Loring Williams. Mrs. Long, milliner in New Castle, moved to Hamilton, Ohio. Brenneman and Beam, furniture dealers in New Castle, oldest business in Indiana. "Ruth Ann Shelley has returned from her visit to North Carolina. She attended the Yearly Meeting [of Friends] at Greensboro. She describes the meetinghouse as being of a primitive style of architecture. The seats were made of rough boards, with a pretense of a back. The soil is poor and badly cultivated. In some parts it is as red as the brick of this county. The people are enjoying a feast of opossum fat and persimmons. Civilization has been at a stand still there for the last 50 years." Party of 30 black people from North Carolina arrived at Columbus. When asked destination, said that they wanted the station where the agent had big feet. Sent to Ratcliff at Dunreith.
