April 6, 1871
Spiceland: "William Burgess has sold his farm to Timothy Wilson"; "Samuel Porch has sold his interest in the firm of Porch and Holloway to Verling K. Stanley"; "David Green has sold his house and lot to William Wilson and is moving to Cleveland."
Account of funeral of H.H. Hiatt-see March 30.
Dunreith items: "Mr. Faust, a young man from Carthage, will start a first-class furniture store here this week." "Albertson & Brother are selling a large amount of tile, the quality of which is not surpassed by any manufactory in the county
. . . . Mr. Byers has sold his interest in the firm to the Albertsons, and will start to Kansas next week."
Court expenses allowed: D.W. Chambers for prosecuting Winfield Mendenhall; T.B. Redding & James Brown, defending Mendenhall; W.H. Carroll, defending Jacob leslie; M.E. Forkner, defending Geo. Starkey; Serepta Crandall & Martha J. Hill, adjudged insane; James McAfee, page service; Chambers & Denius, meals for jurors.
J.W. Hedges appointed deputy county clerk.
"A.C. Davis has sold his brick business house in Dunreith to Mr. Wilson, who will probably occupy it himself as soon as the present lease expires."

April 13, 1871
Jane Johnson, died 2nd Mo. 14, 1871, at Spiceland after long illness. Had several children, all predeceased her. Obituary by Lilburn White.

April 20, 1871
Jacob Nixon, born in North Carolina in 1782, father of Jesse Nixon. Often seen on streets. Son Richard in Kokomo.
Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends Educational Conference held in Richmond.
Miss M. J. Macy teaching at Orange near Richmond; Miss Riddick at West Elkton, Ohio.
Jonathan Rogers family moving to Danville, Ill.
Spiceland: "Achilles Unthank, whose headquarters as a government surveyor have been on the Sunset Slope for the past seven years, came home to visit his relatives and friends. He came 4,000 miles to make a visit of only one week."
Spiceland: "Eli U. Cook having engaged to teach another year of school at Springdale, Iowa, has purchased property in that town."
Vierling K. Stanley and wife celebrate wooden anniversary.
Spiceland: "Evans and Johnson are two of the happiest men in town. Two more boys."
Spiceland: "Alfred Hadley, of Parke County, delivered a lecture last Sunday evening on peace. If we should make any comments, we should say that we think him a very peaceable man."
"John Bunker, one of the oldest citizens of Franklin Township, died last Sunday."
Richard Peed died Monday last, 3 miles south of New Castle. Born in Mason Co., Ky., and moved to Henry County 15 years ago. Buried at South Mound.
Adam Beam killed Monday in accident at Union Depot, New Castle, by runaway team.
Mary Holland, daughter of Joshua and Nancy of New Castle, died of consumption last evening.
Mrs. Cosand, born Dec. 25, 1773, mother of Gabriel, fell and badly hurt, living on Flat Rock.

April 27, 1871
Jacob Howard, long jailed for retailing without a license in Knightstown, now living in Hartford City.
"Jason Foster, of Spiceland, is offering his farm and vinegar establishment for sale."
Account of mock state legislative session in Progress Hall at Greensboro. Participants: Thos. Ragan, Mr. James, C.C. Hinshaw, J.H. Newby, H. Jay, W.H. Meissner.
Long article on controversy in Devon Universalist Church in Liberty Township. R.S. Corwine expelled from membership. Elders Wilson Wisehart, John R. Millikan, and James M. Boyd charge he refused to give anything toward a new church building. Corwine responds his house had burned and could not give until construction began. Brother Howe, apparently the pastor, drove expulsion. Anderson Spencer, Luther Mills, and Joseph R. Leaky support Corwine's version.
John W. Heaton appointed administrator of Henry H. Hiatt, late of Henry County, decd.
