E. Martindale letter: "I have been a resident of Indiana since October, 1811. I came to Henry County in the spring of 1832. The farms that now appear so beautiful, were then just beginning to be improved, or dense forest in nature's own state. The people were hospitable and neighborly, but I had to incur some blame for not complying with their custom of furnishing strong drink at house-raising and log-rollings. This I could not do with a good conscience. Well, by bearing a few sneers and scoffs with patience, and by precept and example (in my weak way) opposing vice, and encouraging righteousness, I have (through mercy) been spared to see great moral and religious reforms in Henry County. But I still ardently desire greater advances in moral purity and true piety."
