"Samuel Porch of Spiceland is engaged in repairing watches, clocks, etc. Mr. Porch is an adept in these matters, and those having machines of this sort afflicted with stoppages or any sort of 'won't go' ailment can't do better than consult Mr. Porch professionally."
"Professor E.J. Rice, well remembered in this place, died recently at Trinidad, Colorado, where he was engaged in teaching."
Thomas Ball of Franklin Township, aged about 50, died last Saturday, buried by IOOF.
William McDowell's stable in New Castle burned. Elmer Albaugh lost tools stored there.
L.L. Burr building in New Castle burned. Occupied by Burr, dry goods; Hoover & Ridgway, grocers; Monroe Mowrer, harness maker.

"Spiceland has been somewhat scandalized by a case or two of 'flagrante delicto.' It is rather a moral town as a rule, but the bad material sometimes seem to gather, like bad matter in the human system, and come to a head, and become offensive to the sight and moral sensibilities."
Spiceland: "On the evening of [June 15] Elkanah Beard, who for two years past has been a missionary in India, will give some account of his experiences. We understand that he has brought a number of native idols and other curiosities with him."
Boston Sunday School "is no more." Boston is in Liberty Township, school district 3. Organized in spring of 1872, "and J.H. Hewit, a young man of good moral abilities, was selected as Superintendent." Problem-superintendent more interested in music than Scripture.+

J.M. Hiatt of Cadiz represented Henry County at state Sunday School convention at Logansport.
Mrs. Anna R. Dale opening "forenoon school" at New Castle Academy.
New Castle: "The proprietor of the White Swan indulged his patrons in a huge old drunk last Tuesday night, and then to save his foul carcass from the minions of the law he lit out in company with Jim Gray, another dead beat, and the prayers of the community are offered up for their continued absence."
Hillsboro report: T. Ice & N. Mower, wool merchants; Mr. Cary runs saw mill.

Spiceland: Elkanah Beard lectured on India.

Rev. Thomas Comstock, ME pastor in Richmond, died last week, buried at Liberty Mills in northern Wabash County.

New Castle Courier sold to Adolphus Rogers for $5,000. "Of Mr. Rogers we will say only at this time that he is a thoroughly wide-awake young man for whose abilities and accomplishments we entertain a very high degree of respect, and whose good opinion we hope to merit, and with whom we trust to be an ever amicable relations."
Robert L. Polk nominated by Republicans as judicial candidate for Henry, Hancock, and Madison Common Pleas Judge. L.P. Mitchell of Henry County lost nomination for prosecutor to Mr. Saunders of Madison Co.
School District #3, Liberty Township items: Moses Brown has built new barn, Joel Healton a new fence, and William Wimmer a new tenant house. One Mr. Allen is blacksmith and the other the township assessor. "Michael Wright has sold his farm and bought one on Buck Creek." Ez Schildknecht courting a Koons and William Conway a Couch.
