The Elliot cemetery was first used in 1833, when Jean Elliot, the first wife of Judge Abraham Elliot died during the dreaded worldwide cholera epidemic that hit during the summer months of that year. Records state that approximately 10 percent of Henry County was wiped out by its affect that summer. It was at first used by the family of Judge Elliot, later when the State of Indiana passed a law that benefited any land owner who donated land for a cemetery was passed, the Elliot family donated the land as a private burying ground for the dead.    In the 1900s the cemetery was used primarily as burying grounds for paupers. There have been several burials of county home residents in the old cemetery. They were listed in the home records as "buried in the Elliot farm cemetery." Those names are included in this list.    This cemetery was first recorded by Thomas Hamm in the 1970s and published in a book -Cemetery Records - Henry and Jefferson Townships, Henry County, Indiana. This last month (April 2005) I returned to the cemetery and recorded all of the burials since the 1970s, nearly 70 additional burials.    Today the cemetery is maintained by the Henry Township trustee and is mowed regularly and well cared for and still has space for many more burials.
