Wednesday, July 28, 2003 Blue River Township Established 1820s
The Bales cemetery is located on CR 200N at about 950E in Blue River Township near the Henry/Wayne County line.
It was first used sometime in the early 1820s. This cemetery is one of only four cemeteries known to exist in Blue River Township. The Mooreland cemetery is owned and maintained by the town of Mooreland. The other three, Bales, Downing and the Messick are supposedly maintained by the township trustee.
The Bales is mowed regularly, but very little, if any trimming is done around the stones and the edges of the cemetery. Deputy Ken King and his work release crew were waiting on me as I arrived. We went in and cleaned around the stones and the fenced-in family plots and cleaned them out and totally raked the grounds. There are a few stones down in this cemetery, but not many. There are several stones in the edges of the north side that are overgrown and are starting to fall over. It looks nice from the road, but when you go to the top of the hill you will see the difference.
As long as we can have cooperation from the township trustees and help from the Henry County Sheriff's Department, we can get a lot of these old pioneer cemeteries cleaned up and looking good once more.
