The Sugar Grove MEC cemetery located on the Sulpher Springs Road, about ¼ mile just north of Indiana State Road #38 in section #17 in Henry Township. The Sugar Grove Methodist church was located near the cemetery for many years and was later moved to a new building a little south and across the road from the cemetery where it is still in use today.    The Sugar Grove Methodist Episcopal Church was organized on 7 Mar 1839 when William McDowell, Emsly Brookshire, Ezekial Rogers, George Rogers and John Conner were elected trustees of the church to be known as Sugar Grove MEC. Two days later, on 9 Mar 1839, William McDowell sold to the church trustees one acre of ground to be used for the erection of a house of worship and a burial ground for its members.    The cemetery today is under the care of the Henry township trustee and is well maintained and still in use. It is sometimes used for pauper burials. Since many pauper burial go unmarked, have tried to obtain as many names as I could from the Henry Township trustee, but she would not give me any of that information so I have added as many as I could locate from other records.    During the days of the "clan" (1920s) there was a prominent member of that organization buried in Sugar Grove cemetery and it drew a large crowd of visitors and a parade down Broad Street out to the cemetery for his burial.    This list is a combination of the list that Thomas Hamm compiled in 1976 and the list of the names that I have compiled on my return to the cemetery this year (February 2006) Being an old cemetery many stones were unreadable and some had not weathered well and were also unreadable and many graves are unmarked in here. So some names will be missing that may be buried here. If you know of any buried here that are not on this list please let me know.
