His parents were much honored and respected citizens by all that knew them and educated their son as best as they could in that early day, for New Castle was a wilderness. At 12 years of age his father died. When 15 years old he was apprenticed to the tanners trade with John Powell. This trade he followed for 14 years, then a partnership with James Miller was formed carried on a boot, shoe and leather business for a number of years. The year 1866 he embarked into the grocery trade and continued in this for about 12 years. He followed farming for several years. For about 4 years, health prevented any active work. He grew to young manhood, enjoying comparative few of the advantages the youth of today and generation are blessed with. None, it can be said, knew but to respect him and honor him. nor could his name be mentioned but with commendation. Quiet and unobtrusive in manner and bearing,, kind hearted, generous and character..." More About HIRAM THORNBURG: Burial: East Southmound Cemetery, Henry Twp. "Mrs. Lydia Thornburg, 97, Oldest Woman in County Dies... Pioneer Resident Succumbs at Home On Lincoln Ave. Mrs. Lydia Thornburg, aged 97 years, 3months and 4 days, New Castle's oldest woman resident and one of the pioneers of Henry county, died at 11:00 o'clock last night at her home, 1201 Lincoln Avenue. Her husband, Hiram Thornburg, died April 1, 1888. Of seven children, four remain- Mrs. C. S. Hernly and Ethel Thornburg, at home, Simon P. Thornburg, 929 South 14th St. and Dr. F. L. Thornburg, of Middletown. There are fourteen grandchildren. The day after their marriage in Union county, where Mrs. Thornburg was born, Mr and Mrs. Thornburg came to the village of New Castle to work in the John Powell Tannery. Since that date, July 4, 1849, Mrs. Thornburg has lived in this community. That year is famous for the United States history for the great gold rush. The first home of the Thornburgs was on the site now occupied by the Livezey Tin Shop. They next moved into a log cabin where Idlewild, the former L. A. Jennings home, stood for many years. They next moved to a residence at 14th and Race Streets. Fifty years later they sold the plot of ground to the T. H. I. & E. traction company which erected the station which now stands there. They then built the home at 1201 Lincoln avenue which has remained the family home since that time. In an interesting interview with a Times reporter a year ago, Mrs. Thornburg told of the many changes that have taken place in the time that she has watched New Castle grow from a small village to a city of 20,000 inhabitants. When she first came here, corduroy roads were common. Sugar was made at home from maple sap and soap, straw hats and many other articles were home products. Mrs. Thornburg enjoyed automobile rides and attended the First Methodist Episcopal church, of which she was a member (Portions of the following were extracted from the photocopy some unreadable....Tentative arrangements,...Lincoln Avenue...South Mound---) South Mound Cemetery in Henry Twp. Henry County is the cemetery. Inscription records prove this. More About LYDIA JANE CREEK: Burial: East Southmound Cemetery, Henry Twp. Henry County, IN Census: 1850, New Castle Twp.
