The canal started in Lawrenceburg and originally ended at Cambridge City, on the old National Road. Hagerstown merchants financed the extension to their town, making the canal 75 miles long. This project was one of the reasons the State of Indiana went bankrupt in the 1840s causing the State of Indiana to amend their constitution, making it illegal to ever go in debt again.
