Berkeley Art Center’s outdoor patio has been transformed with the assembly of a ten by seven foot ceramic wall by Berkeley artist, Harold Paris in addition to sculptures by Peter Voulkos and Steven DeStaebler. Taken together, these works celebrate the unique contribution of three Berkeley artists who transformed works in clay from the realm of utilitarian arts and crafts to the scale and depth of fine art. Their work added a sculptural dimension to the unique figurative expressionist painting by David Park, Nathan Oliveira, Joan Brown and others that originated in the Bay Area. It was also catalytic in influencing other Bay Area artists who worked with clay such as Robert Arneson, Manual Neri, and Viola Frey. All works are on semi-permanent loan to Berkeley Art Center by the estates of the artists. Pictured: Harold Paris, Wall II, 1960-61 |
