Lynn Hershman Leeson uses art and technology to engage the viewer in considering women's roles in conversation with critic, historian, and writer Moira Roth. Issues of identity, truth and fiction, and development of character provide fertile ground for a dynamic exchange between artist and historian/writer. Q & A and light refreshments to follow.

An Evening with Squeak
Fundraiser for Berkeley Art Center

Internationally acclaimed artist Squeak Carnwath with her architect husband Gary Knecht are graciously hosting this very special event and fundraiser for Berkeley Art Center in their impressive studio and home complex in the Egg House near Oakland Chinatown. The evening will start with a personal tour of Squeak Carnwath's studio, followed by a delicious signature dinner catered by Tom McKinley. Squeak will talk informally about her work in a salon-style discussion over desert.
Tickets are $175 per person, $150 per person for donor-level and above members
All proceeds benefit BAC and the price of the ticket is tax deductible up to $100.

Tour of Headquarters Studio + Gallery and the private collection of Alan Selsor

A special event for members! Donor level members attend FREE of charge.
We'll meet two members of the Berkeley visual art community, and hope you will join us for lunch afterwards. Lisa O'Reilly is founder and director of Headquarters Studio and Gallery, a community arts center built upon collaboration and art as social practice. Lisa is a recent graduate of UC Berkeley's master's program in visual studies who shares her personal storefront studio to support and showcase the work of dozens of local, national, and international artists.
Alan Selsor is an art dealer and consultant with a focus on Bay Area artists of the 20th century. He is also a passionate collector of works on paper, largely but not exclusively from our region. For our visit, he will display seldom-seen works from the 1930s through 1950s by several Berkeley artists including John Haley, Erle Loran, Glenn Wessels, and Karl Kasten.

Artist Performance and Informal Artist Mixer

Berkeley Art Center will host a 2pm performance by RISK artist Alex Nichols in conjunction with the exhibition. Following the performance will be an informal mixer where visitors can meet some of the artists in this provocative, 34-person regional exhibition of cutting-edge contemporary work. Light refreshments will be served.

Berkeley Art Center is pleased to be the recipient of the exclusive June 8 performance of Cielo Vertical Arts in the Tower designed by internationally acclaimed artist Ann Hamilton at the Oliver Ranch in Geyserville, CA. This unforgettable experience will bring a limited number of guests to the private grounds of the Tower, a unique acoustic environment and a new type of performance space defined by two staircases built in a double-helix form. The Oliver Ranch is a world-renowned sculpture ranch owned by collector and developer Steven Oliver and his wife Nancy. Located in the heart of Sonoma County, 70 miles north of San Francisco, and known for its wineries and scenic pleasures, the Oliver Ranch is home to 18 remarkable site-specific installations that can be experienced by reservation or invitation only. Jann Nunn

With materials as diverse as steel and glass, Jann Nunn forges sculptures and site specific installations which occupy both a physical and a cultural landscape. Her carefully researched and poetically conceived themes range from "the deeply personal to overtly political." Nunn holds a BFA from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and is an alumnus of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

Stephanie Syjuco

Stephanie Syjuco is a conceptual artist on the cutting edge of social practice. Her strategies include use of common materials, the public domain, social networking, intervention, collaboration and humor to investigate themes of authenticity, consumption, value and labor. Her recent projects include creation of the artist-collaborative: Shadow Shop at SFMoMA in 2010, and Free Texts: An Open Source Reading Room at this year's ZERO1 biennial.
